This page
is dedicated to the memory of those fallen officers who gave
the
ulitimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our sympathy goes out
to them and their loved ones. We hope to keep their memory
alive
by paying tribute to these officers and their services.
On
March 17, 1991 Officer Sandra “Sandy” Robbins
made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and this
department
suffered one of the greatest losses it had ever experienced.
Officer Robbins, as of this writing, is the only and first
officer to
ever lose their life in the line of duty. Officer Sandra Robbins
started out in our department as a police dispatcher in 1986
and
soon learned that she would like to contribute more to the citizens
of the City of South Houston by becoming a full time police
officer
in 1989. Officer Robbins was well liked among the employees of
the department and was highly thought of for the dedication
that
she exhibited.
On the night of March
17, 1991, while answering a call for help from an EMS unit,
which
was on a call at the time, left the station to assist the technician.
At the same time the cities EMS ambulance was responding to
the
same call. As both units converged on an intersection with red
lights and sirens enabled, neither driver could tell that
the
lights flashing from the surrounding buildings were from any
other units but their own. Both Sandy’s unit and the
class III ambulance entered the intersection precisely at
the same time.
Officer Robbin’s unit was hit in the driver’s side
front door and was flipped over several times. Both units were
totaled. Officer Robbins was Life Flighted to Herman Hospital
where she pronounced dead on arrival from massive chest and
head
injuries.
Officer Robbins will never be forgotten as we
have a Memorial Rose Garden and plaque on the police station property,
as well as stickers placed on all the patrol units in her honor.
